Warrior III VH-TAX
Weather QNH 1015; Wind: 4kt NW, Temp: 20c
Runway 35R
Time for some more solo circuits. I need 2 hours of Solo circuits (plus another theory test) before I can be signed off for "Area solos". After stuffing up my landings during the last 2 lessons it would also be an opportunity for some much needed landing practice.
The day couldn't have been better - light winds almost straight down the runway and smooth (slightly hazy) air. Jason gets me to preflight the plane and we are soon on our way. Being an early morning flight, the engine is still cold so the run up takes a few extra minutes but the advantage is the circuit is almost empty.
The first couple of circuits go great. I quickly establish my reference points for my circuit legs and are nailing my approach speed (80kts on base, back to 70kts on final and 65kts on short final). Because my approach speeds are right, the round-out and landing are also much better.
After a couple of landings, Jason gets me to taxi to the Southern Run-up bay and jumps out again. As he heads back to the school, I quickly mount my GoPro camera, go back through the run-up checks and taxi back to 35R.
The circuits came thick and fast and I'd worked out the last piece of the my recent landing problem (I'd wasn't shifting my focus from the landing point to the end of the runway soon enough) With the speeds and my focus right (and little winds) the landings felt great.
I was having so much fun I didn't want to give the plane back. If only my landings were like this all the time. As they say Practice makes perfect.
